Disability


Project: Access to premises & employment for disabled people

From 1975-79, as consultant to the Royal Association for Disability & Rehabilitation (RADAR), he designed a research and outreach programme to gain access for disabled people to public premises and to places of employment, arts and sports centres and nature reserves, publishing several books and articles on these topics up to 1989 and lecturing at the Fire Services Technical College. He obtained additional funding from the Manpower Services Commission and the Disabled Living Foundation.

Population & health

Project: Maternal & Child Health in Haiti

In September 1977, audited national programme of maternal & child health in Haiti on behalf of Marie Stopes International for report to ODA Population Bureau.

Project: Fertility & Nutrition in Kwara State, Nigeria

Designed a fertility study in Nigeria for the ODA Population Bureau (under Philip Payne’s tutelage of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 1976-77) and funded by ODA Population Bureau and International Planned Parenthood Federation, in association with the University of Ilorin (Dr. Eldred Parry). This led, inter alia, to the AHRTAG (a CIBA funded project) publication, "Diarrhoea Dialogue".

Family Planning 

Project: Ghana National Family Planning Programme

Working for the Ford Foundation in Ghana he designed and managed a programme for commercial distribution of non-prescription contraceptives, for the Ghana National Family Planning Programme (1970-72), providing the model for the Indian programme and still regarded in Ghana as seminal work.

Community Health 

In the mid to late 1960s, Struan conducted research into infant feeding practices among Lagos women, Nigeria, working at LUTH Department of Community Health under Dr Adeniyi-Jones, the late Prof. Olukoye Ransome-Kuti and Dr David Morley at the London Institute of Child Health. For this work Struan was awarded a Ford Foundation Mid-Career Fellowship, taken up at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health (1969-70).
